10/20/14 Notes–

20 Oct

For the Kerouac re-writes:  Just state an opinion, make a point!  And DO NOT be imprisoned by the five paragraph essay!  If anything I expect this essay, with a word expectation of 1,000 words, to be six or seven paragraphs.  Expand on concepts, like I urged some of you do (love, co-dependency, addiction, travel, etc.).  Write a paragraph on you and how you feel about the book, or how Kerouac’s book affects a great number of people, or is necessary for Americans or anyone seeking identity or living in passion need to read…  Please have the re-writes to me no later than 11/5/14.  Submit and move on…

For the Wolff paper:  This paper is challenging, I know.. you have to juggle the 2 sources as well as incorporate 2 or 3 of the short stories.  Do you have to quote the stories word-for-word?  Not necessarily!  You can shortly refer to certain moments in your chosen stories, just using a couple sentences!  This might help!  Also, please be mindful of your introductions and conclusions!  With the rubric for this essay, there are ten points possible for both (intro & conclusion).  So write them, read them, re-read them, re-re-read them, read them aloud.  Make them sterling representations of your writing and idea composition.

Don’t use semicolons and don’t use parenthesis!  This is what I call “blubber punctuation”.  You don’t need it.  And frankly, you qualify yourself when you do, expressing uncertainty and lack of confidence.  It disrupts the voice.

Write well, and enjoy your writing!  On Wednesday, we will have 3 readers, break into groups, open for general question-and-answer, and conclude.  Then to Hemingway…

See you all Wednesday–  A most pleasant of eves to you all.

Yours, Loyally,
