Do you believe in purity? We attempt to keep ourselves pure. But in the end it is futile. Try to keep yourself as pure as white. The whiter you try to be, the darker your shadow becomes. In a world drenched in gray, white loses its color and the darkness prevails.

    Back to the light

You escape from the light when there is nothing left there.
Light can no longer be your home,
    Your safe haven.
    You are alone.
It is cold. It is dark. It is pain.

You escape from the light when the world has become too much.
You cannot feel, you are numb.
Love is but a drift of the imagination.
Before reality sets back, you want love.

    But you are alone.
In the escape from the light
    You became lost.
There is no one to bring you…
    Back to the Light.

The scientific evidence that there is a correlation between mental health illnesses and creative abilities brings great insight into the creation of beautiful artwork. The pendulum swings two ways for the artists. Drugs being their source of silencing the “colony of voices,” or their way of accessing these voices; a way to reach the inner depths of their brain, and their sub-consciousness. The addictions may stem from the ability to reach the artists’ full potential for creating magical pieces of artwork. It is a way to stimulate parts of the brain in unison while otherwise not able to accomplish this while sober. This creation and forming of different centers of the brain aligns with the most creative abilities that they can form. It is their way to expressing their inner most selves. With drugs, it stimulates different areas of the brain at the same time. While alcohol, it can be a similar effect, but it also can be a means to silence these voices. Alcohol can allow the artists’ to express themselves without any regard for feelings or what people think. It is like dreams…they are the brain’s/subconscious way to show people things, tell them, the way to navigate through life, which gives people answer. But, how to re-access or remember them? Some people seek to drugs to access these, others alcohol, some people never do, while others meditate. Ultimately, drugs and alcohol can allow artists, and, in general, people, to become more conscious.

    The bright yellow face stood
    surrounded by darkness
A red snake struck the air as it quivered
    closer
    closer
    and
    closer to the yellow face
The radiant red readied itself for attack
A blue blob squatting in the lonely corner
peaked out to watch in despair
When suddenly a triumphant orange bursted out
blocking any pathway to the bright yellow face.
The radiant red ebbed down as if it was bowing down to its master
    slithering away in disgust
into the greyness with that potent web that consumed everything in a haze
The blue blob seemed to be staring off into the distance
as if no threat could have ever existed
Then without warning the yellow face swallowed the orange whole
leaving only a bright yellow face
and a lonely blue blob left in a corner

The following is a work of fiction, inspired by the Chelyabinsk meteor.
Water sloshed as the geologists scoured the river bank, searching for any remnants of iron alloy stones.
A few days earlier, the small river-side town in Minnesota has been thrown into chaos when a meteor burned its way to Earth’s surface. There was not a single body unharmed by the impact. Fatalities. Injuries. Power outage. Collapsing homes. Broken glass. Possibly the worst part was all the memories the meteor destroyed as it demolished homes.
Aid was sent to the small town. People came to help the injured and help rebuild the damaged infrastructure. Along with them, meteorologists, astronomers, and geologists swarmed in a crazed fury. They could not believe the luck of being able to study a real meteor strike in their lifetime.
But the meteor they came to study was more elusive than they expected. Although it was large enough to be more than a shooting star that disintegrates in the atmosphere, the meteor still deteriorated greatly. Instead of hitting the town in one giant piece, it was broken into thousands of smaller meteorites.
So the geologists had their work cut out for them. Searching the land for one piece of space rock, just so they could brag, “I discovered something from outer space.”

A room over flowing with young toxicant teens, who are here to celebrate the end of the week. Such a huge accomplishment that it deserves a night out where you fill your blood stream with toxins. Just one night out where you can loose all control over your body, have conversions you will forget and actions you will regret. A room full of strangers who act like buddies, laughing, joking, yet they could careless who that person is the next morning. These young toxicant teen acting like soulmates just because they have one thing in common, addiction of feeling toxic.

Alcoholism… A problem that so many writers have dealt with, for numbness or inspiration. A way to break down the walls and get to the harder things in life. These people who are driven to write also damage their lives in the process. Maybe it’s a way that they can feel things more deeply, embrace the chaos, and acknowledge what they want instead of what they’ve been told. Art can be created through destruction of the artist. There’s a burden that comes with it, feelings and emotions. They connect and empathized. There has to be pain there and people build up walls to hide from those things. People can be afraid of themselves and their thoughts. Alcohol removes that inhibition and can make them be true to their writing. Even if it doesn’t always turn out well, 90% of writing is editing.

    Naps are a great thing.
You can turn off your worries
    And just rest awhile.
    It was always a
    way of coping throughout my
    childhood. Every
time I got in trouble, I
    took a nap after.
    It’s the best way for
    me to recuperate and
    just release my stress.
    Just a few hours
of nothing to do but close
    your eyes and relax.
    Block out the whole world
and just be with yourself for
    just a little bit.
    Sleep is the only
time you can be truly in
    solidarity.
    The unconscious mind
tells you to take a break when
    it’s necessary.
    Your body must follow
    its demand, otherwise you
    won’t function nicely.
    An automatic
    function necessary for
    our survival.

    The Little Things
What makes us great? What makes us go further? What makes us go to the next level and achieve greatness? The little things do all of that. Staying up late and studying an extra hour for an exam. Getting one more rep in the weight room to help you reach personal records. Helping others out resulting in good karma for you and your surroundings. The little things. We may not like it, but it’s for the best. The little things make people the happiest and can change somebody’s mood both positively and negatively. Such as coming home from a long day of tiresome work and the first one to greet you before you even get to the door is your dog because you have been gone an eternity and the only action you can’t resist is a big smile on your face. The little things.Dotting your I’s and crossing your T’s make the difference from a B to an A and you always kick yourself because you didn’t take the few seconds to make your work even better. The little things. Forgetting to put a negative sign while thinking you aced your math exam can make or break your grade. You had the correct answer, but forgot the lousy negative sign. Forgetting to carry over the one in at the beginning of your addition problem makes you look like you have no idea what you are doing. Even though you understand the process and how to do It, the only thing you forgot to do was pay attention to was … the little things.

    A Letter to You

I’m sorry you don’t think that it’s worth it. That the voices that claw behind your eyes make the days too much. We don’t know what you feel. We tell you that in order to be worth something, you have to keep moving our way. I’m sorry that we compartmentalize everything that you do. That we suggest it’s bad to take meds. Then you become afraid to be honest with the world about how you feel. Your skin feels like it’s on fire and yet you stand there, smiling like nothing is wrong. It becomes routine. Wake up. Make up. Break up. Repeat. Soon it is part of you. This act that everything will be fine if you fake it one more day. Yet it never changes. The thoughts get closer together, suffocating your thoughts. Preoccupation mixed with anticipation stifles your steps. I’m sorry that we don’t understand. Things become more that you’re used to. The thoughts manifest into animal that you can’t control. You begin breathing, feeling, seeing. We think it’s bad to go down this road. We see that you need help, yet we offer none. It’s this fear we cannot describe. We want you to help yourself. We tell you to occupy yourself. Fill your mind up to drown out the voices. Yet we can’t seem to fix you. What we fail to realize is that we don’t need to fix you. you are a perfectly imperfect human being.

The mindless babble begins to flow from my thoughts. The circuits are fried, the engine blown; the only function coming from my hand and arriving on the paper. None of this will make sense, but I am too tired to try and string a line of coherent thoughts together. Ten minutes is not enough time. It’s not enough to make what I want to say appear on the paper. Not enough to give a voice to all of my unheard thoughts, dreams, and ideas. I need more time. Everyone needs more time. The world needs more time to accomplish what it needs. Procrastination is an issue for present-day citizens, constantly wasting their precious time on less important things. Noise. Too much outside noise interrupting those much needed thoughts that are trapped within our minds. Trapped along with the moronic ideas that are created solely as a distraction from what is needed and expected for on to accomplish, to succeed in this collapsing world. A world that is slowly being killed by our stupid and disgraceful actions. Life is something that we all strive for, so why are we constantly killing the one thing that is keeping us alive? In order for the world – no, planet – to survive, we need to cut back on the wants that we so crave in our lives.

    Murmuration

Backed by a grey sky the movement of starlings
    Flock undulating, hypnotic to me
Moving as one like a silent black curtain
Flowing as life breathes the breeze through the trees

Hints of a hidden world inside me
Glints as it shimmers, the winter sun down sweetly

Down all my years a procession of faces
Love unforgotten in memory I see
Remembrance it flutters like wings of the starling
Formless the image it shifts constantly

Shuttered, this veil an indigo sea
Here in my mind’s eye this protean mass fills me
Muttered in dreams I glean the meaning
Here I’m transfixed by this murmuration’s being

Face to the heavens the rain patters gently
The dappled imprint of my god once unseen
Too long lain mottled, moss-grown tangled life-weed
Free like the flight of the starling I’ll be

    Disconnected

When people have an abundance of something, it does not take long for that thing to be taken for granted, no matter how valuable it is. Whether it be money, time, possessions, or even necessities, people take things for granted as soon as they become abundant and normal. In first world countries, this has been seen with how people throw away food, leave the faucet running out of carelessness, or how even smart phones and computers are seen as a normal occurrence. However, I would argue that the same thing is happening with social interaction. Now that there seems to be a social network for every aspect of sharing, people are beginning to see social interaction in a whole new, and unfortunately dim, light. Interacting with people has become a one way street, shouting from the street corner as people pass by in their news feeds. You CAN instant message someone or even see their face through the camera, so why get together in person? With the abundance of communication choices, people do not see that while they have more options to talk with each other, they are choosing to not communicate at all, losing touch.

We all do things that might harm ourselves, but at the same time this actions make us feel good. There has been famous artist that are also strongly addicted to drugs or alcohol. Their addictions has not stopped them from making awesome works of art. Every writer might have very different reasons for their addiction, but at the end the addiction is caused by the same reason: it make them feel better. This should be an indulgence because if they already are successful and have a brilliant career I don’t see the point of doing something that affects their health. Instead of being intoxicated with drugs they should look for healthier alternatives to relieve stress.

    I’m learning,
    learning to live each day,
    learning that I’m ok.

    I’m learning,
    learning to breath,
    learning to speak.
    emotions never die
    I’m learning,
    learning to be free,
    learning to soar.
    caged birds never fly
    I’m learning.

A great artist is able to connect to their audience through their words or pictures. The artist can provide a new perspective or voice for their audience. The audience connects with the artist and experiences the journey along with them. Artists provide an experience and sometimes an escapes to viewers.Artists are able to provide this experience with true feelings and true adventures. The audience is given access to the artist mind and feelings. Being a passionate artist means being connected with one’s whole self, and being able to express those feelings and emotions to a wide audience. Being in touch with all your emotions the dark and the good can be overwhelming all the time for an artist. Most artist and more authors spend most of their time alone writing and being burden with passionate emotions. Artists can often take drugs to provide their own escape from themselves and their own work. Some artist will use drugs to enhance their art but destroy their own life in the process. Fear and Loathing would be less of a wild journey without the use of drugs in the story. The perspective of drugs can give the artist an escape while providing the audience with a new perspective and journey. Most Artists suffer from their overwhelming emotions pushing them towards drugs in a destructive way.

Ten minute free write and already lost for words.
I feel like somedays my words are what make my day, and others I feel as though I’m lost for words trying to put back together my day. I write generally to make myself motivated. I write lists, I write reminders and I write little doodles to try to inspire my day. Lately I am trying to bump these lists and doodles to quotes and meaningful words. What that has in store for me I have no idea at all, but I am pretty excited. I wish I could write a beautiful poem or a large paragraph explaining one word over in a million different ways, but for now all I can offer is my random ramble hoping somehow someone can understand and get it. When you don’t know what do write about ten minutes goes by much faster then you think. I finally finished my reading which was great, always an amazing feeling to get to the end of the assignment and to take a big breath and be thankful for what you have just done, then reflect. I have never in my entire life read a book to this extent. I have read books with bigger words and pages that never end and I have read books that I was never able to put down. This book is different though. I have never been able to feel the way the writer feels. Sometimes when Thompson explains situations or little things I jump there and I feel it happening. I can see it with all the passion and details he adds to one simple sentence comes a million different thoughts. Great read thus far, looking forward to finishing the book and seeing what other things we can find out about this drug trip of an adventure.

    What is love?…
For some love is the most evil feeling with angel face.
For others, the feeling just does not exist as all the memories and experiences that at some point in their lives lived and buried in the depths of his being.
But for me, love is the most pure and irrational feeling that life gave us as a gift.
Many of the human beings decide to reject this beautiful gift and prefer to live with bitterness in his heart and I can assure you that living that way is not entirely live.
Love is that extra spice that gives flavor to life .It is such a nice feeling that love is able to fill you with joy and happiness. At the same time if you let it be, it can act as a light source inside yourself and lighten the darkest corners of your soul…

    Life sucks.
But you can’t let that get you down.
You can’t let that moment of powerless win over you.
    You are stronger than that.
Stronger than what the world is throwing at you!
    Don’t cower away.
Don’t consume yourself in another world.
    Challenge it.
    Take it on.
You win the battles you want to be won.
    You decide the victory-
    Only you can.
Everyone has different battles to fight,
but each battle is unique to each individual.
So help each other out when you notice someone is down.
You can’t win their battle for them.
But you can give them a nice assist.
Because sometimes an assist is all you need
And helping someone else might end up resolving your own battle.

    Hunter S. Thompson.
Why. Why do you consume yourself with the drugs and alcohol!
    WHY
Being a journalist is tough- I know. It’s my minor.
You have freedom- and yet you don’t.
You can do something- with permission.
Don’t let your challenges get you down.
Rise above who the world was forcing you to be.
Because you had so much potential to be more.
    More than you already were.
    Why Hunter S. Thompson.
    Why?

    Life is full of color
Color then turns to black and white; the craziness is about to begin. A wild ride that you have been waiting for. A crazy decision or leap of faith that you are always craving.
The black and white fade together everything becomes,
    Grey.
The crazy has sunk in. Run.
Colors remind me of life. Everything will be going good, then mediocre and then all hell breaks loose. I strive for madness but only to an extent. When it becomes overwhelming, I start to lose sight of the goal I am trying to reach. 2 full time jobs and a full time student in on the verge of being too much to handle.
Grey. The color that defines the madness in my life.
I am looking for that color again but I don’t know where to start to look.
I need a vacation. An adventure. To forget the bad and remember the good. To recall what I am striving for. It’s at the tip of my fingers.
Almost there. Don’t give up now for this goal will bring you the happiness you have always been searching for. A stable job, enough money to support your family. To vacation yearly, to maybe even have enough to give back to the parents for all they have done for me growing up.
    Grey
I need to get out of this grey and return to the color.
Going black and white for now is acceptable but,
    Grey.
    It needs to go.

I’m a strong belieber of the saying we want what we can’t have. It’s so accustomed in our culture because we are the privileged ones in this world, third world countries are more concerned about getting by on a daily basis and surviving then here we are putting so much emphasis on a game. One where the average ticket is about $5,000 which is about how much my little Nissan Sentra cost my parents. As a society, I feel like we share the common belief of wanting the best next thing before the person next to us which is something so ugly. Most people don’t conform or stop and think of how grateful they should be to have basic living necessities, instead it becomes a race of who will get the newest model of whatever it may be first unknowing that that feeling will go away as soon as we get what we want. It’s an obtainable feeling because we never fully grasp it, it’s a concept. We spend our whole lives working towards something and once we get it we don’t care for it because we’re infatuated by the next thing we lay eyes on. I’m a victim of this too, I don’t always stop and look around to see that I have an amazing, complete family or a job that helps me pay for my necessities or a car that gets me to my desired location instead I obsess over some shoes that just came out and work 8 hours of my life to get them, a whole day’s work just went into those shoes. We live in a materialistic country where how you dress does often matters and what you look like has an impact on people, it’s quite sad sometimes.

  24. Omar Reyes February 8, 2016 at 7:49 am #

    Why am I here?
Many of us, if not all of us, ask ourselves this question at least once in our life.
The sad part is that only we can answer that and sometimes finding that answer is the hardest part of life. With life, many of us know, it never goes as planned and our lives are disrupted by outside forces. These forces can be new jobs, moving, having children, or other responsibilities. In the midst of such responsibilities we can lose sight of finding the answer to the question. Living without purpose in this world is dangerous. For myself I know that if I didn’t have goals to achieve, I would still be the burn out I was two years ago. Nothing is impossible no matter how far or out of reach it seems. Don’t let people govern your life or tell you what they think you are and aren’t capable of. This will only get in the way of answering the ultimate question of why you are here. Take hold of your life, make the best of crappy situations, and live. Find your purpose and you will be happier as you work for your goal in life. If you find yourself confused about what to do with your life, try new things, experience life from a different perspective and maybe you’ll find answers you didn’t know you were looking for.

Running on the hills became not only a commitment but a necessity. Every summer afternoon I anxiously awaited for my teammates at the park to begin a new adventure on our long run. A new path, a new pace, or even just a new look around to our surroundings to notice what we hadn’t seen before. On our runs we could talk about our problems, we could run for hours and be lost in our conversations, ignoring the burning on our calves or the aching on our quads. We were unstoppable and even as the hills overwhelmed our legs we kept on pushing because it wasn’t our legs we were training but our minds. It wasn’t our milage that seemed impressive, but the calmness in which we maintained our conversations while our bodies demanded us to stop. For us that is what made running beautiful, finding the balance between physical exhaustion and mental relaxation. As a team that is what made us great. It wasn’t all the medals that we won, or all the undefeated seasons we accumulated. It was being able to work and find the strength in each other while understanding one another. In cross country I learned that winning isn’t the most important thing in life if it isn’t done with joy.

  26. Carley Jacobo February 9, 2016 at 7:49 am #

When most people are met with the phrase “follow your dreams” they think of it as naive and unrealistic. When young people are encouraged to do what love with their life, many of them immediately list off reasons why they can’t. When you set the definition of a “dream” as something that is incredibly large, incredibly flashy, or just very impressive, it is understandable why many of us freeze up when we are encouraged to pursue those dreams.
The reality is, not everyone is going to be able to star in a Hollywood movie or win the Nobel Prize. Not everyone is going to end up with their dream job, or end up completely satisfied with their professional life. When the definition of a dream is so over-the-top, what is the point of idolizing them?
A dream should be hard to achieve but commonly reached.
